The 2019 Kentucky Derby was the 145th running of the race and took place on Saturday, May 4, 2019, in Louisville, Kentucky. The field was open to 20 horses, with a purse of US $2 million. The Derby is held annually in Louisville on the first Saturday in May, at the end of the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. It is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of 1 14 miles (2.0 km), and has been run at Churchill Downs racetrack since its inception in 1875. The Preakness Stakes (May 19th)
Thoroughbred racing comes to Maryland on the third Saturday in May (18th) each year for the second and shortest leg in The triple Crown. This week-long celebration concludes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore and determines if there will be a Triple Crown contender for the year.

The Belmont Stakes (June 9th)
Two down one to go – can we crown a new champion? The Belmont Stakes is the oldest of the Triple Crown races. This third and final leg is contested three weeks after the Preakness and five weeks after the Kentucky Derby, Saturday June 8th, 2019. Only 11 times has a horse been able to wrap it all up in New York.
